Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with the presence of multiple chronic non-skeletal pathologies (including cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, non-alcoholic hepatic steatosis, some neoplasms and diabetes), suggesting the possibility that this vitamin can have numerous pleiotropic effects at the extra skeletal level, thanks to the ubiquitous distribution of its receptor.
